All About Genres

I would say that genres were the second biggest topic of the semester. A big thing I learned about genres is that they are very complex and do not just have to deal with the writing. If I had to give it a definition, I would say that a genre is a group of literature that shares specific conventions or characteristics. Genres can also be broken down into subgenres. We dealt with genre a great deal in this class. For each project, we had to focus on a different genre. For each genre, we had to do some form of genre research. I became more familiar with fairy tales, brochures, and blogs in my different genre research. In order to do all the writing we did this semester, you had to understand what genre it is supposed to be in. If I had incorporated no magic or special creatures and talked about a football game between two teams in my fairy tale, I would not have been following the conventions or characteristics of that genre.

This image helps depict the variety of genres.
